Sam Hoskins replaced Harry Beautyman in the only change to the Cobblers side for what was their third consecutive away game in a week. Billy McKay, who spent two seasons at Sixfields between 2009 and 2011, started up front for Oldham.
A superb early save from Connor Ripley kept out an Alex Revell header - the Cobblers striker prodding the rebound over - while Zander Diamond saw a shot blocked, both chances created from Matt Taylor set-pieces.
As Oldham enjoyed a spell of pressure later in the half it took a goal line clearance from Aaron Phillips to prevent Lee Erwin from opening the scoring. Sam Hoskins then appeared to have a shot blocked by a raised arm inside the Oldham penalty area on the cusp of half time but the referee waved away the Cobblers appeals.
Kenji Gorre had a shot blocked at the start of the second half before Harry Beautyman came on for Alfie Potter on the hour mark.
Joel Byrom and Marc Richards both came on as Rob Page made his final two changes, John-Joe O’Toole and Alex Revell making way.
Latics substitute Calaum Jahraldo-Martin was denied by a block tackle from David Buchanan while Gorre, sent clear by a throughball from Hoskins, put his shot wide when off balance.
That chance for Gorre proved to be the Cobblers last of the night but they still left Oldham with a point, making it three draws from their opening three league games back in League One.
