With Darren Carter suspended, JJ Hooper came into the side for the Capital One Cup first round tie against MK Dons.

Matt Duke pulled off two fine saves in the opening ten minutes, denying Jason Banton and Patrick Bamford as the League One side starter the brighter.

MK Dons then took the lead on 12  minutes, Ben Reeves with a shot from just inside the Cobblers area that went in via the inside of the post.

A point blank save from Duke prevented Shaun Williams from doubling Dons lead just before the half hour mark. Roy O’Donovan had the Cobblers first real attempt on goal, his audacious lob over Ian McLoughlin landing on the roof of the net.

Jason Banton doubled the Dons lead on 53 minutes, the on-loan Crystal Palace winger reacting quickly to stab the ball home from close range after Duke had saved an intial effort from a corner.

Former Cobblers loanee George Baldock spurned a good opportunity to make it 3-0 just after the hour mark.

The Cobblers first change came on 70 minutes, Ishmel Demontagnac replacing Kevin Amankwaah. Ivan Toney then came on for JJ Hooper. Toney was quickly involved in the action but his effort was blocked before Gary Deegan fired a shot wide.

Roy O’Donovan then did pull a goal back on 76 minutes, his right-footed shot from Toney's flick finding the bottom left hand corner of the Dons net.

As the Cobblers continued to crank up the pressure, a goal bound shot from Danny Emerton struck the referee while Matt Heath went close with a header. Demontagnac saw a shot blocked by Lee Hodson before David Moyo came on for Emerton.

Demontagnac set up Moyo with a fabulous throughball but the young striker couldn’t quite get his shot on target. Another terrific save from Duke kept out a flicked header from Brendan Galloway in stoppage time and it was the Dons who booked their place in round two of the 2013/14 Capital One Cup.
