After three wins on the bounce at Sixfields the Cobblers side was unchanged for their first away game in 2013.

The first real effort on goal came on 14 minutes with Lee Nicholls doing well to save and hold on to a free-kick from former Town striker Marc Richards.

Chesterfield were in front soon after however, Jay O'Shea slotting the ball home after some good set up play from Danny Whitaker.

That lead was then soon doubled, Marc Richards finishing well when one-on-one with Nicholls.

Richards made it 3-0 on 25 minutes after being played in by Tendayi Darikwa who capitalised on a Cobblers slip in midfield.

Tommy Lee then saved a fiercely driven shot from Adebayo Akinfenwa as the Cobblers looked to gain a foot-hold in the game.

Akinfenwa fired just over on 58 minutes while at the other end Nicholls saved a deflected shot from Richards. Clive Platt then shot wide after being played in by a great pass from Chris Hackett.

The aforementioned Hackett went agonisingly close to pulling a goal back on 69 minutes but his terrific strike cannoned against the post before going out for a goal kick.

Tommy Lee made a double save to deny Ben Harding and Jake Robinson as Lewis Hornby came on for Akinfenwa. Ishmel Demontagnac then replaced Harding in the Cobblers second change.

Neal Trotman headed against the base of the post from a Chesterfield corner on 88 minutes in what proved to be the last chance of the afternoon.
