Lewis Hornby and Lewis Wilson both came into the side replacing the injured John Johnson and the suspended Louis Moult. Ben Harding returned on the bench where he was joined by Jake Robinson following the completion of his loan spell at Luton.


James Gray tried his luck from distance on 5 minutes but Lee Nicholls was there to comfortably make the save.


The Cobblers took the lead on 17 minutes, Joe Widdowson crossing for Adebayo Akinfenwa to head home his 8th goal of the season.


With the Cobblers in the ascendancy, Lewis Wilson struck the underside of the crossbar having been teed up well by Clive Platt. Dean Winnard was shown a yellow card for a high and late challenge on Hornby.


George Miller equalised for Accrington on 37 minutes, his well-struck shot from 25 yards finding a way through a crowd of players following a corner for the home side.


Peter Murphy was booked on 51 minutes for bringing down the pacy Chris Hackett who curled the resultant free-kick just over.


Romuald Boco fired Accrington in front on 57 minutes, his well-placed shot giving Lee Nicholls no chance in the Cobblers goal.


Boss Aidy Boothroyd made a double change just after the hour mark with Jake Robinson and Ishmel Demontagnac replacing Clive Platt and Lewis Wilson.


Robinson equalised for the Cobblers just three minutes after coming on following some good work from Akinfenwa. Robinson was then shown a yellow card for his goal celebration.


Akinfenwa put the Cobblers back in front on 69 minutes, rising superbly to head in a cross from Emyr Huws.


It was 4-2 on 76 minutes, Akinfenwa completing his hat-trick with a sweet finish from 8-yards.


Robinson then struck the outside of the post as the Cobblers continued to rampage forward through the Stanley defence. Henoc Mukendi came on in the Cobblers final change with hat-trick hero Akinfenwa the player to make way.


Mukendi fired over from distance but there were to be no more goals as a topsy-turvy game at the Crown Ground ended with the Cobblers victorious in a 4-2 scoreline.
